A shrub is distinguished from a tree by its multiple stems and shorter height, usually under 5–6 m (15–20 ft) tall. Plants of many species may grow either into shrubs or trees, depending on their growing conditions. Small, low shrubs, generally less than 2 m tall, such as lavender, periwinkle and most small garden varieties of roses, are often termed subshrubs or bushes.
Shrubs enhance your landscape with color and texture. Blooming shrubs add color from early spring, spring, summer, and fall. Many varieties are continuous bloomers or rebloomers. Colorful foliage is another great option to consider in landscape design. Evergreens, berries, and brightly colored twigs bring color and texture into the winter months.
Shrubs are available for full sun to shade and come in sizes that will fit into any landscape. Great for use as specimens, hedges and screens, borders or groupings, shrubs also provide great wildlife habitats for birds and butterflies.
Think of azaleas and rhododendrons, whose dramatic and prolific blooms help make April one of Washington’s most beautiful months. Or dramatic hydrangeas with their huge blossoms that shout “look at me!”
